The gallbladder is found underneath the liver and serves as a reservoir for bile, which plays an important role in the digestion of food. This organ can become inflamed secondary to the formation of lithos (stones) due to the consumption of foods that are rich in fats and cholesterol, but it can also be caused by other diseases.
Inflammation of the gallbladder can cause cramping abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and occasionally fever. If one of these stones migrates to the choledoch duct, it can cause jaundice (yellowing of the skin) and occasionally pancreatitis.
